Hosted by Ramona Mitrica, Director of the Ratiu Foundation / Romanian Cultural Centre in London Following the invitation launched by the Ratiu Foundation / Romanian Cultural Centre in London, choreographer and arts manager Cosmin Manolescu will make an introduction on the contemporary dance scene in Romania in the frame of Culture Power. The video lecture ‘Dance.Ro – Romanian contemporary dance today’ will give an insight into recent developments on the contemporary dance scene in Romania. It will be illustrated with video clips from ‘Dans.Ro 2007’, a special DVD produced by Gabriela Tudor & Project DCM Foundation with the support of Romanian Ministry of Culture, as well as with excerpts from different Romanian choreographers and projects. A Q&A session will follow. This event is dedicated to the memory of Gabriela Tudor, an arts manager who played a major role in the development of contemporary dance in Romania. Cosmin Manolescu is a Bucharest-based choreographer and cultural manager. He is the executive director of Gabriela Tudor Foundation (the new name of the former Project DCM Foundation). Cosmin made his debut as a choreographer in 1994 part of the Marginalii, one of the first collective dance group created after the Romanian revolution of 1989. Since then, his artistic works have been successfully presented in important festivals and venues in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Beirut, Bremen, Bucharest, Dublin, Florence, Liverpool, Lyon, New York, Diego, Paris, Rome, San Francisco, etc. Together with Gabriela Tudor, he created in 1997 the Project DCM Foundation and played an important role in the development of contemporary dance in Romania. Since 1997 they have been collaborated together in several dance projects such as Balkan Dance Platform, a regional showcase taking place every two years in a Balkan country, BucharEast.West international dance festival (2001, 2003), Sibiu Dans 2007, Migrant Body (2006-2007), Serial Paradise (2003-2007), Private Show (1999 – 2007), Dans.Ro 2007 tour, ArtistNe(s)t (2006 – 2008). ‘Supersomething’ (2008-2009) was the last final artistic project on which Cosmin Manolescu worked with Gabriela before she passed away. Cosmin also developed projects in collaboration and with the support of DTW New York, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding and DanceAdvance Philadelphia. He is the recipient of several awards and fellowships such us: the Award of the Soros Center for Contemporary Arts for the development of the contemporary dance in Romania (Bucharest, 1998); ArtsLink Fellowship (USA, 2002); SACD and Sogeda Awards for the project ‘Don’t Ask the Blond’ (Monaco Dance Forum, 2004); Prize ‘Nouveau Talent Choregraphie’ (SACD Paris, 2005). Cosmin Manolescu played an important role in the creation of the National Dance Centre in Bucharest, the only public institution for contemporary dance in Eastern Europe. Culture Power is a programme initiated by the Ratiu Foundation, consisting of a number of presentations and constructive dialogue with an invited audience.
