VIII âObsessionâ
So the arrangement was made and when they arrived back at the Circus, they spread the good news: Velvet was engaged, so to give honor to the countâs title, she would no longer dance. Marcus was terrorized by the news, but thatâs a story I find too boring to tell. Instead, I will search John trough the crowded streets of Paris and tell you a story about how sometimes, people break their own rules. It was October the 9th when this happened! In the Bishopâs house everything started normally. From time to time you could see a woman or two mooring the dead lady and then a man came in, short, fat, wearing a purple coat, telling them to stop or the master would see them. It mustâve been 10 oâclock and John was still in his room. Gone were the days when the beautiful Angeline would wake him up to have breakfast in the garden. But it was not her that was in his thoughts. He kept on thinking about Velvet. That beautiful dancer, so beautiful you would think sheâs a nymph. Every single word she said the night they spoke. âWhy are you here tonight,âŚ.., your wife just died,⌠just another man in the crowd.â, those words kept repeating in his head with an amazing speed. And then he started wondering what he did there. He went at his friendsâ invitation, but he shouldâve never gone to look for her. To look for a woman he first saw at his wifeâs funeralâŚ.but suddenly he heard a knocking and a woman appeared. -I am sorry sir, but you have visitors-she said with a French accent. -Who?? -Your parents, sir. -Tell them I will go down in a minute. Making a sign that she understood, she left his room. Five minutes later he was dressed and talking with his parents. His mother kept on talking about Angeline and sometimes she covered his fatherâs voice, like she wouldâve wanted to stop him from saying something. But he said it anyway. -Brian Carteen, saw you a couple of nights before at the Circus⌠His mother interrupted- I told him it couldnât have possibly been you, but he won't listen. -No mother, it was me. His mother made a terrified face and his father gave him a pity look. -Your wife just died, for Goodness Sake!; and you are having parties in the Circus? What if Angelineâs parents find out?? -Angelineâs dead! They have nothing to worry about. He said it so fast he didnât have time to think about it and after he said it, he couldnât believe it; but anyhow he continued. -Donât worry. That was the first and the last time I was there. The next words of his mother, were more advices that I donât find useful to tell, since he didnât listen to them. As the hours kept on passing, he kept on thinking more and more about her. He did try reading books, writing all sorts of letters to friends or drink until refuse. But no matter what he did, she was still there. She was the exact opposite of Angeline. Instead of blonde hair and blue eyes, she had dark brown hair and green eyes. Instead of innocence, she had knowledge about the world. He still regretted Angeline; but Velvet; she wasâŚshe was just too charming. It was late at night when he realized that no matter what excuses he used, he started having an obsession for everything Velvet represented. In truth he had an obsession for her. So it was then when without knowing it, Velvet made the second big step, after the marriage, to fulfill her plan. She brought him at a point where he was ready to break his own rulesâŚfor her!!!
