VENUS ~ THE BALLAD
-a prose poem - by Sorana Lucia Salomeia And maybe it was meant to be so… The air was thick and heavy like a dying slab of lead hanging loose above a grave of uncertainty, moving, fighting, writhing and howling. The dreamy sky was humming a hallucinating ballad – or could it be the foreseeing lullaby of the dead? It was the merciless, treacherous silence trying to hide for just another moment from the inevitable reality that was about to burst out from its ferociously narrow grotto. Old dark hideous statues of angels of grotesque features (poor unhappy sculptures whose faces were all covered with the dry cold blood of the rough hands that had given them a name, but failed in endowing them with a pure soul) were stretching out their feeble mangled arms as if trying to grab the only moon beam that had had the presumptuous courage to crush with a sudden violent movement the dark window that had stolen its truthful right to life. Hush… For a few moments the entire world stood still in wonder and amazement - just for a few moments… And suddenly a loud deep cry of despair came down like the sharpest of thunders, hurting the crust of the thoughtful earth, piercing the ground with bitter cruelty… It was the call of death… the call that had kissed the lips of the fading angels… the angels… the moribund fallen creatures whose numb wings were now being fluttered in hazardous waves through the restless fingers of the breeze – an unknown breeze. And so this was enough to make the ancient oaks startle in their wisdom… It had been an unexpected sign descending from the heavens… And the limes murmured incomprehensive verses, with their leaves shivering in coyness, their injured branches bleeding in streams that found no borders… Oh yes, this grave of youthful expectations was no longer the lie of betrayal that had been hiding hiding in its mischievous underground tunnel… The moment had come… It was the moment when the dagger would plug itself into her innocent heart and … no, there was no way back then… The hard ungentle hand of destiny had torn those pages off and wrote its own rebellious history instead – there was no pint of return! The wind had woken like a bloody vampire, slowly opening his huge heavy weary eyes, taking one quick thirsty look around himself, shaking his head with total confidence, rising from his lugubrious coffin… And yes… the very first thought… another vision… another victim… The war was about to begin! The stream was dancing a barbarian dance with violent horrifying movements under a bridge barely holding on to its hinges penetrated to the core by the rust of the unforgiving time, balancing in carelessness rotten boards within a hazardous dream… The roughly sculptures angels’ grins were penetrating the thick curtains of cold rain… the rain who was coming down in rapid streams… the rain whose metallic rattling was nevertheless so discreetly interweaving with her tormented mind, their valences merging into a heart – rending ballad. It was her… it was Venus! Descending like a fairy maiden from her unreachable prison, the embodiment of sorrow she embraced… and so she wandered like an intoxicated aimless vagrant along the edge of the betraying bridge… Taking one more look down before she would make her last decision, a crystal – blue tear she dropped… and then she raised her diamond eyes towards the clouds, scanning the depths of the celestial oceans in desperate search for the imprisoned queen… the moon was no longer there… Copyrighted © Sorana Salomeia, Iasi, Romania
