I was nobody’s friend
When I woke up one morning Strange head rested upon The crumpled pillow Next to mine. Unclenched thirst and Queer memories foreboding In the air Of a past night When that half-opened mouth Flattered my vanity. I knew I would do it again Sometimes It’s just that sometimes Happened so soon That the latter incident Didn’t get to grow fainter. Obsessive images of me Entangled in foreign arms Peel it off this monochrome slide! I tried to stop its recurrence And force myself Into different Technicolor day dreams But I still had the ink taste in my mouth – Tattoos and pierced belly buttons. Burning faced and dry-eyed I tried to swallow But Only managed to choke Sweltering in those Punishing sheets Tightened up around my body Like a funeral veil. I tried to heave myself up Swarms of flies down my body Muffling a desperate charm… Bring it back to where it was yesterday!
